Crystal Bowersox engaged to musician Brian Walker, planning fall wedding

The ninth-season American Idol runner-up  has gotten engaged to musician Brian Walker, People reported  Friday.Bowersox and Walker plan to wed next month, according to her representative.
The wedding will be the first for Bowersox, who has a 1-year-old son from a previous relationship and split with former boyfriend Tony Kusian the morning before she took the stage with Lee DWyze for American Idol's final ninth-season performance show on May 25.

While Bowersox initially described her split with Kusian as a "mutual" decision based on his desire to maintain their prior "small town" lifestyle, she later admitted it had surprised her.

"[It] did shock me," she said.  "I woke up Tuesday morning and he just had an epiphany. He wanted a simple, quiet life and I respect that. I'm glad he told me instead of sticking it out and realizing it later that he would be unhappy."

The 24-year-old from Toledo, OH signed with 19 Recordings/Jive Records after Idol's finale.  Her debut album will be released this fall.

John McCain may be “Gray wrinkled hair Old Dude” but his daughter Meghan is a Hottie
Meghan, 23-year-old blonde daughter of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, is “a total Daddy’s Girl.” She also seems to be a little handful. As a rebellious teenager, Meghan admits she once almost became a Democrat.

Instead she registered as independent, but two months ago, as a Father’s Day gift, she reregistered as a Republican. “I do not refer to the right. I think it is common knowledge. It’s time to reinvent the Republican Party. I think my dad can do it,” she says.

Epicenter: The Envy beckons a crowd

Canadian rockers The Envy are having a couple firsts today -- the band is the first act at today's Epicenter festival in Fontana and it's the first time they've played California.

It's the band's last date on tour with Kiss, playing tonight. Gene Simmons signed the band to his label.

"It's true that everything is much more beautiful on the west coast," lead singer Shaun Frank told the crowd that grew with each song.

I'm liking his indecisive half-shirt, half-tank top which seems appropriate for a day like today that's feeling super-hot so far. Could make for a fantastic sunburn pattern later too.

Soak up German culture at these Oktoberfest celebrations

The Deutsches Haus, which this month hosts its last Oktoberfest celebration at its current Mid-City location, is not the only place in town to get your “oompah” on.

Throughout the month, Avenue Pub (1732 St. Charles Ave.) will pour a rotating selection of German brews, such as Schneider Aventinus, Ayinger Oktoberfest and Spaten Munich dunkel lager. Every Friday at 5:30 p.m., the bar will also tap a rare mini-keg of unpasteurized beer from the tiny breweries of Germany’s Franconia region. Only 225 of these kegs were imported to United States and most went to larger cities like New York, Chicago and Washington.

On the north shore, Covington’s Heiner Brau holds its 5th annual Oktoberfest on Friday, October 8, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 9, from 2:00-6:00 p.m. Sample German cuisine, hear Julie Council and her band, and try the beer of German-trained brewer Henryk Orlik, including his seasonal “festbeir.” The festivities take place at the Covington Trailhead across from the brewery (226 E. Lockwood St.).
